| Position description |
WildMetro is looking for field researchers
to assist in collecting data for a fern survey of the five boroughs.
This project continues work begun in 1962 tracking changes to New
York Citys native fern population, using historical data compiled
from city herbaria, data collected in 1962, and preliminary data
collected during summer 2005. This position will include learning
to identify native and exotic species of fern, travel to city parks
and other localities with WildMetro staff/volunteer groups, learning
to preserve fern specimens, and use of handheld GPS units to collect
and document fern localities. Hours will vary: full- and part-time
work is available.

| Position requirements |
Some background
in the natural sciences (high school or undergraduate).
Comfortable working in the field with possible exposure to mosquitoes,
ticks, poison ivy, and summer weather conditions.
Willingness to learn plant identification. |

to effect the intelligent protection of nature in urban areas. Founded
in 2002, WildMetro has collaborated with many of New York Citys
major institutions, including the American Museum of Natural History,
the National Park Service, the New York Botanical Garden, and several
