Research Coordinator

Position description

Together with the Research Director, the Research Coordinator will head WildMetro’s research programs and initiatives, focusing on 1) our ongoing study of small mammal communities in urban-influenced areas, and 2) developing new, and expanding existing, research programs. This is a full-time position with numerous responsibilities, including: conducting field work, writing and editing research proposals and reports, analyzing data, recruiting and training volunteers, obtaining funding, coordinating logistics, inventorying and purchasing research supplies, securing state and other permits as necessary, and occasionally participating in WildMetro’s education and advocacy programs.


This position is ideal for someone wishing to gain general field experience and a hands-on, in-depth understanding of the research process, and also practice animal handling techniques. Successful applicants will also be assured contact with local environmental professionals and opportunities to write and communicate grant, educational, and presentation materials.

Position requirements

Undergraduate degree in Biology, Ecology, or related field.
Prior field and/or research experience.
Willingness to work long and odd hours for stretches of time.
Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint required.
Must be able to work independently and as part of a team, coordinate logistics, communicate and cooperate well with people from different backgrounds, learn quickly, and teach volunteers.

Founded in 2002, WildMetro has collaborated with many of New York City’s major institutions, including the American Museum of Natural History, the National Park Service, the New York Botanical Garden, and several area universities.
Compensation WildMetro is a nonprofit institution and commands a small operating budget; compensation will be modest and commensurate with experience.
